trying to install a mouse

I am trying to install a mouse on my husband's computer and have tried several types without success. The pointer just will not move! When I go to system nothing shows as being installed. When the computer is first started the following message comes up
Hardware monitor found an error - enter POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP for details
Well when I go there there aren't any details that are specific. I don't know what to change when I am there so I have only reset the default settings but that doesn't work either
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
 
Please give more details, like what type of mouse (USB,PS/2,Serial) and what
type of computer (laptop or standard)?

I have tried all three types of mouse(s) and none of them will install. It is a standard computer.
