Is there anyone who could assist me in connecting to wireless. My router
is
set up and working fine, my DSL modem is perfect, but when I try to go
wireless I get a message "Windows cannon configure this wireless
connection".
I am a senior lady and pretty new at computers. I would greatly
appreciate
help from anyone. Thank you. M.
Often, that message means that there is another piece of software
controlling the wireless card, and Windows defers to it.
There is a way to force Windows to look after the connection; go to Control
Panel, Network Connections, locate the wireless connection, right click and
choose Properties. Choose the Wireless Networks tab and select "Use
Windows to configure my wireless network settings". However, you probably
really want to use the wireless card's software.
Look in the system tray, bottom right corner of the screen, for a controller
applet for the wireless card.
Someting you can do while testing this is to turn wireless encryption OFF on
the router. This should trigger an almost instant connection at your PC,
which can help you find the applet. Do this ONLY for as long as it takes
to set it up, and turn encryption on as soon as you can. It helps if you
connect to the router by wire at the same time; this lets you cut & paste
the wireless encryption key from the router into the wireless card's
software quickly. I often make a text file with Notepad on the PC to store
this.
