Trying to get Access

I have Excel XP for students & teachers. That version does not contain
Access. I want to get Access to learn about it.
I have Office 97 Professional from long ago that does contain Access.
Good
I install Office 97 and select Custom install and install Access only.
No problem in the installation. I try to open Access and get an error
message that Access cannot open because my machine does not have a license
for it.
I ask around and it is suggested to me to:
Uninstall my Office XP
Uninstall Office 97
Install Office 97
Install Office XP and select to upgrade only Excel, Word, and Powerpoint,
and leave everything else as is.
I do all that and all goes well.
Access is still there. Good
Same error message. Not good.

Does anyone know what is happening and how I can get Access 97 running?
