Trying to format PC but cant see HD?

Hi

I am trying to format my HD (120Gb Super ATA150) using XP Home. I select boot from cd in the bios but when XP loads and I select format, it says it can't see the HD? What do I need to do? Do I need to make some sort of partition first?

P.S. XP Pro is currently running and the mother board is an ASRock.
 
Is this a first installation on a new HDD or have you deleted everything from a previous install. ?
 
does the drive already have an OS on it or is this a fresh install ? does the drive show up in the BIOS ?
