I'm curious to know if any book scanners are available on the market that
automatically turn pages and scan text and/or graphics into some application
like Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF. I would greatly appreciate your feedback
on this.

I googled around a lot today. I found some book scanners, but everything
I've found that way so far is VERY expensive.

Seems like some industrious scanner company, like HP, could come up with
something that works reasonably well for a lot less. One that I saw today,
which wasn't really all that great, sells for 27 grand. Oh, well...

So what you want is an industrial grade scanner for the price of a home
scanner. Do you even begin to comprehend the technology behind such a
device. Or, how about the fact that they may only sell a few dozen of these
book scanners in a year. If you were making such a device, and knew that the
sales were limited - would YOU give it away.

I didn't think so!

For your information, Mr. Urban, I was developing software in machine
language for IBM 305 RAMAC Computers as well as IBM 1401s, 1410s, 7010s, and
7094-7044 Direct Coupled Systems at NASA when you were probably crawling
around in diapers. Yes, I do comprehend the technology behind such a
device. I also completely the technology behind other types of scanners,
fax machines and other devices well enough to know that the reason those
companies don't sell more book scanners is simply because they apparently
don't have the intelligence and business savvy to realize that they could
and would realize far greater profits is they found ways to produce book
scanners and the like to sell for far more attractive pricing. If they did
so, those folks (and you) would discover that a far larger market exists for
their products than they have imagined. Do you know what the first computers
sold for, or the first TVs, or the first VCRs, or the first CD players and
recorders? And what do they sell for today?

As bright as you appear to be, I'm sure that you will realize
immediately that book publishers, authors, and copyright laws will have
something to do with the lack of marketability.

If the market was there, many types - at lower costs - would be available
now. The market is NOT there so the costs are prohibitive!

They won't give it away just because you want a cheaper one.

Good point, Bob. I must admit I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for
bringing it to my attention.
