I am using Windows XP and I can't for the life of me figure
out how to delete an .AVI file. Whenever I try to delete
the file I get this message:"Cannot delete XXXXXX. It is
being used by another person or program. Close any programs
that might be using the file and try again." Believe me I
have closed all the programs that I can and still I can't
delete the file! I have restarted my computer God knows
how many times and still I can't delete the file!!!! I
have even looked in the registry to see if I can locate
anything that might be causing this but to no avail.

There is only one person using this computer, namely me, so
I am the administrator.

Can anyone suggest a solution for me?

Thanx a lot!

Avon.

Boot into safe mode and try it from there, or boot from a floppy and
navigate to that particular file and try it again. If you are using an NTFS
setup, you will need a boot floppy that will read an NTFS partition.

Forgot to mention if you use that floppy to read an NTFS drive, BE CAREFUL
not to start erasing the whole partition by accidental misuse of the
capabilities of that disk!

You can try hitting Alt-Ctrl-Dlt at the same time, this
brings up the Windows Task Manager. Sometimes you can
find the file running in here. If so, right click on it
and choose close. Then try deleting it again. It should
work now.

Windows is trying to read through the whole file to gain the info it needs
to display details. AVI files were never designed for movies, or even
moviez, they are only for clips. If you encode to a real modern container
format you will not have this problem.

In order to delete the file. Make sure the folder hasn't been opened, do
start-run and type cmd. then naviagte to the file and delete it from within
the command prompt.
