Can someone help me? I am trying to create a new partition on my basic disk (33GB, but only 10 in use) which has lots of free space and is cleaned up (I run defrag regualarly). I got into disk management ok, and see the basic drive, but there is no black bar showing my unallocated space that I could use to create a new partition. But I know I have lots and lots of space! From doing some reading, it seems as though I might have to delete my existing partition and start over - aghh, this sounds like a lot of work.

I am doing all this because I have a peer-to-peer home network of a wireless laptop and a desktop connected via a Linksys router. Using Drive Image 7, I want to backup my desktop drive to my laptop and my laptop drive to my desktop. But if I don't create a new partition, then I believe I will end up with backups of backups of backups on the two drives and run out of memory quickly. So I figure I should be able to create new partitions (let's call those "N drives") out of free space on each C drive, and back up the desktop C drive to the laptop N drive, and the laptop C drive to the desktop N drive. Anyway, that's the goal. Any hope?

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty
or has "unallocated" free space.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 , can be used with a drive that already has Windows XP
installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.
