Trying to create a link to a folder

I'm having trouble creating a link to a folder. I want my peers to
access a directory, not a specific file, so I'm trying to create a link
to a directory of files. When I create a hyperlink using the URL to the
folder, the result is "You are not authorized to view this page."
Anyone have any suggestions?
 
Convert the folder to a sub web (sub site) then contact your web host and
ask them to turn on (Allow) directory browsing to that folder.
