Hello,
I know this is going to sound nuts to most of you but I'm trying to
help some friends with a hodgepodge office situation (and I'm still
way learning).
There are 2 sister businesses (owned by the same family) that need to
keep their 2 T1s separate for billing practices. They operate in the
same office space. Right now, each T1 is connected into its own
switch which has all the lines for whichever business (and those
connections go to the patch panel).
What they want is a file/print server that would work for both
companies. What I was trying to do was connect a server & make it a
domain controller & also a file/print server. We've got the box &
it's running W2000 Server. The workstations are a variety of XP Pro,
XP Home & W2000. To make matters worse, they've lost the
administrator passwords for a good number of the boxes along the way
so I can't access things like changing the workgroup name, etc.
I guess my first question is how do I physically connect the server to
the network. Since each T1 goes to its own switch, I'm not sure where
or how to connect the server. I've been told that I need 2 network
interface cards...one to go to each switch. Would that be the case?
Or I've been told that I need to connect the 2 T1s together first. If
that's the case, I'm not sure how to even do that here.
My initial thought was of connecting the server to a hub first & then
connecting that to each switch. Would that work? Thought of
connecting the server & 2 T1 connections to a hub too & then running a
cable to each switch. If that would work, would any hub or switch
with 5+ ports do?
After I get the physical setup, then I'll have to try to connect any
computers on XP Pro or W2000 Pro to the domain & then figure out how
to share files & printers with the workgroup computers I cannot
attach. I was also told that I need to run DCHP off the server too.
Which I couldn't enable with this jerry rigged connection.
Would appreciate any help anyone out there might have.
Thanks!
Chris
