My son was gave a new pc but it was win95 I am wondering how I would set it
up with our internet provider since it will not read the installation cd?We
have dsl on 2 other pc's but they are winxp. The win95 does have the ethernet.

Someone will obviously correct me if i am wrong but i don't think Windows 95
supports DSL. I think, and this is only information i recieved from a user,
that Windows ME is the lowest to support broadband connections. I know a
user who applied to have cable broadband installed and when the engineer
turned up he said he couldn't install boradband because she had Windows 98
and needed a minimum of Windows ME.

That may be because the "engineer" needed to install a connection program
from a CD - I know that my brother-in-law had to do that for his usb DSL
modem.

however, Windows 95 can connect to a network, can't it? If so, just install
an ethernet card (if the machine hasn't got one already) and connect either
via a router/modem or a hub/modem.......That should work, shouldn't it?

Gordon is correct - there is no problem putting in a nic (making sure you
can find one with drivers for Win95 may be another issue) and connecting to
a router/switch/hub. I've had my old Win95 box on my network. But frankly,
it would be insane to put a Win95 box on the Internet, even behind a
router. You would need to be extremely careful in your surfing, there are
tons of vulnerabilities, I don't think there are any antiviruses that will
run on Win95, and the fact that a "son" was referenced means that I would
expect that box to be infected very quickly.

Keep the machine for playing old games and/or word processing and don't put
it on the Internet.

any case Ill let you know if it works.

F-Prot runs fine under W95. I'm using it here with the '95 machine
networked to this XP machine. Never had an infection on it yet, but I only
use it on a couple of sites and it's also running a firewall.

Actually, I checked on F-Prot's site before I posted that because I use
F-Prot on my Windows machines and saw:

"Designed to run on Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, 2003 and Windows XP...".

Since it's working for you, obviously it still does run under Win95. What
firewall are you using? I still think the OP (who wants the machine for her
son) should not put it on the Internet. You obviously know what you are
doing and as you say, only use it on a few sites. We all know that's not
how the son will use the machine. I give it a day, tops. ;-)

I seem to remember F-Prot saying that the next version (v4) of their AV
would only work on '98 and above, but that was well over a year ago! For
the moment at least it still works fine.

The free edition of AVG from Grisoft also runs fine under '95:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01#Compatibility specifically
states that it runs ok as long as you're running at least IE5.01.

I'm using the old v1.0 Outpost firewall, however I've also got a quite
large Hosts file on the machine which prevents access to a lot of dodgy
sites and I never use it for email, so I take your point about knowing
(roughly) what I'm doing. :^)

Thanks for the info. Unlike a lot of techs, I do still support Win95
although I don't have a lot of clients using it. Heck, I'll still support
DOS if it's a job! ;-)
