Hi all,

motherboard: Asus P5/A
cpu: AMD K2 450mhz
bios: latest version: 1.007

harddrive: WesternDigital 80Gb

I try to install W2k but my bios can't find the harddrive.
I tried alternate jumper settings to make it a 32Gb drive, which my
bios can see.
Now I tried to install W2k onto the 32Gb partition but while the setup
is running, W2k will always format the whole drive (80Gb).
Even once I created a partition in the setup process with 32Gb, it
would format the whole drive.

Is there any chance to install W2k onto my drive?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Regards,
Norbert

I seldom recommend this but if you're comfortable with this and you're 100%
certain the power's not going to go out in the middle of this you could
probably find an updated BIOS disk at the vendor's site. Else, right off
hand, I don't recall another solution though someone else might have come
across that one in the past and have found a fix for it.

As I recollect if you partition the disk only that portion will be formated
during the procedure.

Western Digital drives often need Cable Select to be set (rather than Master
or Slave). Check that.
Reset the jumper for 32gb support and power up - DO NOT try to boot windows.
IE press DEL immediately and look in the bios for the HDD and mention of
correct size. Check the drive detection is set to AUTO. If you were to boot
like this (with the 32gb jumper reset) you would very likely get a corrupt
disc which would require a reformat. So be careful.

If the HDD comes up in the bios then, then that is the core of the problem,
so fdisk and re-install. If not then undo the changes I have mentioned and
sorry for taking your time :)

Doesn't Western Digital have a disk tool like Maxtor's MaxBlast IV that can
used in these situations?
