Trust Relationships

Kevin

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with this problem. I
recently did a rip and replace on my network and installed W2KAS in place of
W2KServer. Additionally, I used a different server for my DC while I rebuild
the original server and upgrade it. I installed AD and added to it the users
and the computers in my domain and network.
In checking my event logs I get a recurring error in the system log telling
me I have a netlogon error event id 5513. The description is: The computer
<computer name> tried to connect to the server \\<server name> using the
trust relationship established by the <domain>. However, the computer lost
the correct security identifier (SID) when the domain was reconfigured.
Reestablish the trust relationship. I receive this message for each of my
clients.
I have searched the MS Knowledge base and cannot find a solution to this
issue. I only have 10 client computers that I need to reestablish in my
network. Can anyone offer me direction or guidance to resolve this issue? My
domain has always been a Win2K domain and not an NT4 domain.
I know that I could go to each client and run the Network Identification
Wizard and rejoin the domain but this will add another profile to the client
itself which will necessitate moving the documents and other files to this
new profile.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on your description, I understand that you want how to reestablish
the trust relationship with the domain after it had been reconfigured. If I
have misunderstood your concerns please let me know.

Because the Domain Controller has been reinstall, the SID of the domain and
all the Active Domain objects have lost. Therefore you must rejoin the
computers to the domain to reestablish the trust relationship.

To have the users to use the previous profiles, follow the next steps after
you have rejoin the computers to the domain:
1. Log on to these computers as the domain administrator. In Control Panel,
double-click the System, for the Windows 2000 professional click the User
Profiles tab; for the Windows XP professional click the Advanced and then
click the Settings tab for User Profiles.
2. Select the profile that users had used before.
3. Click the Copy To button.
4. Under Copy Profile To, specify the path to the user's current profile
folder.
5. Click Change in Permitted to Use to select the user that will be
permitted to use this profile.
6. Click OK to copy the profile.
7. Click OK to close System properties.

If the size of the users profiles are to large too copy, there is another
method:
1. Log on to the computer with the user that his profile should be
restored, and then logoff.
2. Log on to the computers as the Domain Administrator. Click Start, and
then click Run.
3. Type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
4. In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
5. Locate your user profile folder.
NOTE: When you open the ProfileList folder, you see several folders, each
of which belongs to a different user. These folders are named according to
the user security IDs (SIDs) and not according to the user names.
To locate your user profile folder, use one of the following options:
- For each folder, click the folder, and then look for the
ProfileImagePath value that contains the path to your user profile (such as
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\<username>).
-or-
- In Registry Editor, press CTRL+F to start the Find tool. Type your user
name in the "Find what" box, click to select the Data check box under "Look
at", and then click Find.
6. After you locate the subkey folder for your user profile, double-click
the ProfileImagePath value.
7. In the Value data box, change the path so that it points to the profile
folder that the user used before, and then and click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.
