Truform--performance killer?

Does anyone out there actually use this truform feature on catalyst? It
seems like nothing but a huge performance killer. When I turn it on, my 9800
PRO just crawls. Any thoughts?

It's a neat feature in theory, but as you said takes a huge performance hit
in practice, as the newer ATi cards don't support Truform on a hardware
level, just emulate it by software. I think the original Radeon was the last
card to have hardware support for truform, but I may be wrong.

It works great on Madden 2004 with my 9700 Pro.

I'm new to ATI so can someone explane to me what Truform does? Also I don't
have a clue what the Smartshaders setting if for. Thanks all! JLC

If you can get hold of the Serious Sam 2nd Encounter demo, or full game and
go through the technology test, you will see what truform does.
It basically smoothes out models.

Smartshaders seem like a bit of a gimmick, and I can see no use for them.
Select one and run 3Dmark 2001, or a game and you will see what they do.
Their setting names are pretty self explanatory.

What game did you run it on? The game has to have support for Truform
for it to work. I've never bothered to use it even though I do have a
couple of games that support it. As someone else said, the new Radeon
cards just do it in software, I used to have an R8500 and it does it
in hardware, but even on that card I never bothered to test it out
because I knew it would run the games like a dog.

??? I seem to recal weird looking models in UT with TrueForm enabled.

Are you sure about this or is it really only the latest games you have
in mind (U2, UT2K3, UT2K4)?

Please advice.

I'm pretty sure it's all but I know for a fact Ut2k3 does.

I still have the original Unreal here so maybe I will fire it up just
for a look-see. Never did finish that game anyway. :-)
