Troubleshooting question

Here is what I know. I just built a new PC, everything worked fine
for the first 2 weeks. I am using cannibalized hard drives and a DVD
drive. Until today, everything worked fine. Now, my system crashes
and plays a single beep from the system speaker whenever I try to put
a DVD in the drive...

Does this just mean that my DVD player just got shot for no reason?
Or is this a windows thing?

Possibly.
However, you could try a couple of things first.
In the Control Panel go to the System folder and then Device Manager. Find
the drive and Remove it. Restart the computer and let windows refind the
drive and reinstall the driver. See if that helps.

If not, try a different data cable to the drive and mb to see if there's a
change.
What happens, by the way, if you put a CD in the drive?

The other thing is perhaps the software you are using to play the DVD. Does
the computer crash when you simply put a DVD in the drive or when you try to
play it with a certain program? Can you read the contents from Explore?

If the drive crashes the computer by simply putting the disk in and doing
nothing else then I'd say the drive has gone to Washington D.C. (well that's
south from Pennsylvania).

Thanks for the tips. One thing I forgot to mention was that after I
put the disk in, it crashes, but when I take the disk out, it
unfreezes. I'll try the things you recommended, and if all else
fails, I have another drive I can try.

Freezes. Mouse is still able to move around, but I can't open any new
windows, or close anything...Pretty much frozen.

I disconnected that device and plugged in a new one. The new one
seems to be working fine, so I'm going to go with the device is
broken. sad pands :(
