I own a Sony VAIO RS114 desktop and I am going through
hell trying to burn a cd with the available DVD/CD-RW
drive, since I had to reinstall Win XP Pro from scratch.
I get the message 'Please insert a writable disk..'
whenever I try to burn some files to a CD.
I have tested with different kinds of media (on one type
I was able to write files before reinstalling the OS, but
not after), I have checked the Registry keys for the
proper settings, I have scanned through several MS KB
articles, but I have had no success.
Please note, I can read CDs and DVDs from that drive.
Does anybody have any clue on what to try next?
I have read an article saying that installing Norton AV
2003/2004 may produce this unwanted result: is that true
also for the trial version?

Hello;
Not anything different between trial and registered v.
The problem is referenced.

Hi,

Can the DVD/CD/RW be properly recongnized in the device
manager?
Try download the latest XP compatible combo drivers from
Sony website. Make sure to download the correct combo
drivers for your model.

Hope it helps.

Hi Mikey,
first of all, thank you very much for answering my
question. I am a little bit desperate, because I have
attempted the recovery actions described on the Symantec
site (using LiveUpdate to update the client core
component), but I got no appreciable results.
Unfortunately, my trial period for NAV has expired, and I
do not know if and how this will affect the proposed
solution. I am thinking of wiping off everything and
reinstalling WinXP from scracth, with a different
antivirus product.

Hello Luco;
You're not the 1st one reporting (in NewsGroups) that the recovery
procedure/actions executed exactly as described fails.

The antivirus I use is AVG v.6 (totally) Free (and complete) personal
edition with free unlimited (can be automated) updates of viral databases.

I do not work for them nor am I associated in any way.

Sure beats the h*ck out of repaying every 6 months or so.

Do not be put off by the free aspect. Give it a try; there's no "catch22" or
hidden cost to it and best of all: it does NOT interfere with ANY
application.
Low overhead and memory loads.

....and follow the free version for personal use "route".
===================

They also have the v.7 which will eventually offer (include) a "freebee"
for personal use but that day has not come yet.
V.6 is not deficient in any way.
V.7 is more "jazzed-up", kind of looks-like "Xp vs 9x".

As to: Reinstalling is your decision ONLY....but I've done it quite a few
times as I insist on my pc behaving exactly the way I want it.

If you go that route just be sure and save ALL personal files and data such
including "favorites and "documents".
