Troubles with Protection

Hi,

I have been asked to look into a strange problem on one of our workbooks. I
threw everything I had at it and now would like to ask if anyone can offer
any leads. Thanks in advance. Here is the problem:

The workbook in question opens up as Shared (as stated in the title bar).
Within this workbook is a cell with an equation which needs to be updated.
Clicking into that cell and then into the formula bar immediately pops up a
message from Excel that the worksheet is protected and the cell cannot be
modified. The message then goes on to say that the sheet should be
unprotected in order to make the change. Easy enough, but oddly, when I
click on Tools...Protection...Unprotect Sheet, it is greyed out. As if the
sheet is not protected. I also, used some option in Excel which told me
that no one else was currently in the workbook. Gosh, not sure what to do
to be able to unprotect the sheet so that the cell's equation can be edited.

Any leads/suggestion would be great. Thank you.

There are lots of things that can't be done in a Shared workbook.

One of them is unprotecting a worksheet.

If you have to unprotect a worksheet, you'll have to unShare the workbook first.

Dave,

That was it. I changed it to non-shared and bingo!! I could unprotect the
sheet and then edit the equation. Thank you so much!!

Hi Norman:

Thank you. Your and Dave's posting solved my problem. By following the
link and subsequent google thread you supplied was certain, then, that the
shared workbook was the problem at hand. Un-sharing allowed me to
un-protect and rest I could handle. Thank you very much!!

Amar
