I'm not very computer literate; so, if anyone replies,
please keep it simple. Hubby bought a new computer (a
Mac), but I plan to continue to use the old PC. I'm
trying to clean up up since our C-Drive shows as just
about full. I tried to do a disc cleanup, but the slider
bar does not seem to progress. Any fixes for that? I
also tried to disc defragmenter, but a message says that
only 7% is available and it needs 15% of space to operate
properly. Any advice for a novice out there? Many thanks!
It sounds like it may have been a very long time since Disk Cleanup and
Defrag may have been run. If so, it will take a long time to run. Run
Disk Cleanup again and walk away from the computer. Come back 2 - 3
hours later. If there is no change try what I've written below.
If Disk Cleanup successfully runs, you will still want to run Defrag.
If Defrag fails to run, follow the steps below.
Read the below all the way through before doing anything.
1. Right click on the Recycle Bin icon and select Empty Recycle Bin.
2. Right click on the Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. On
the General tab under the Temporary Internet files section, click the
Delete Files button. Click OK on the pop-up window. Click OK to close
the Internet Properties window.
3. Try running Disk Cleanup and Defrag again. If no success do step 3,
4, & 5 below.
3. /Optional/ Click on the settings button right beside the Delete
Files button from above. Under the Temporary Internet files folder
Section, adjust the 'Amount of disk space to use: slider reduce the
amount of drive space reserved for those temporary files. If I remember
correctly the default for this is 5% of total drive space available on
the drive partition where these files are stored. With muti-gigabyte
drive this is usually an excessive amount. I would recommend you have
no more than 150MB reserved for this. But if you like to store a lot of
webpages on your local system you may want more than this.
4. Try running Disk Cleanup and Defrag again.
5. /Optional/ Undo step three by resetting the amount of disk space to
use for temporary internet files.
