I've tried conecting a external HD with a usb adapter, but the computer won't
reconize it. when I open the device manager and click on "proporties" of the
usb mass storage device, it tells me "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
does anybody know what the problem is and how to deal with it?

Is the external USB device USB 2.0 and is your motherboard only USB 1.1?
That is a mismatch.

see if that 40-pin socket on the USB-IDE adaptor can fit in deeply.
Does it wobble?

some makes/models of drives have an extra bit of plastic around the
area outside the 40 pins and that means that the USB-IDE adaptor has to
be a little bit deeper to get in.
If it's in, it won't wobble

I found...

This one is deep, it fits all my drives nicely

This one isn't so deep, wobbles in one make/model of drive

The wobbly one gives errors. Though I think it did start. It just
didn't write files properly.

The external USB device is USB 2.0 and the motherboard is only 1.1, but I
doubt that its the problem since the same device worked on a USB 1.1 port in
another machine with a different HD.

Thanks for trying, but that's not the problem, the socket fits in deeply
and dosen't wobble.

Typically if I have a USB device that doesn't work, I give up on using
that device on that computer. Or if it's the case, give up on using
that device on any computer.

It could be the adaptor or usb port or both.

Do all your other devices work in that port? Maybe get a new adaptor.
Try that adaptor in another comp too.

you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the usb stack
.. There's an order, like the specific then the general..what order to
unisntall periph, composite, hub, controller. done in safe mode.
this usbman link might help, this was true for 9x (dunno if it's true
for xp)
