Sorry to trouble you all. I have unwittingly reset some
option with powerpoint 2002 so that the mouse reacts as
if I'm holding down the CTRL key. I also cannot launch
the slideshow from the SCREEN icon in the lower left side
of the screen. At the time that this occurred, I got a
popup message talking about FILTER KEYS and a new icon
appeared in the lower right of the screen. I toggled
those on and off, but it did not seem to matter. I'm in
a crunch for time and simply don't have the time to
search through all the possibilities. Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may have activated the 'sticky keys' function of windows.
Look in your control panel | accessibility |sticky keys options.

Sounds like you may have inadvertently activated an accessibility feature
called StickyKeys in later versions of Windows by pressing the Shift key five
times. Blame the cat, that's what I always do. ;-)

Press Shift five times again to get rid of it.
