Trouble with Installing SP4

I recently reformatted a HD and installed W2K Professional
on it. Everything seemed to be working alright until I
tried to login at the next startup. After entering the
Admin user ID and password, the computer hangs despite
playing the Windows welcome sound. The only way out is to
hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, log out, and try to login again. Usually
one of the subsequent attempts logs me in.

So after tinkering with some settings with no luck, I
decided to install all the hotfixes, etc. But when I
attempt to install SP 4, after the files extract, at some
point the installation window closes without actually
having installed the service pack. I thought it may have
been an issue with the Express install, so I downloaded the
network install but the attempt was futile. I even tried
installing SP 3, but the same thing happens; at some point
in the install, when it's taking inventory, the window
simply closes. The annoying this is that there is no error
message at all.

I also tried to reinstall the OS using the W2K installer
CD, but when I try to upgrade, it says that there is a
previous installation that hasn't finished yet. Even after
restarting I get stopped at the same point.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated as I'm going
insane...

This sounds a lot like a problem I am having. There is a pop up box
that complains about not being able to verify the integrity of
Update.inf, and make sure cryptography service is running. I have yet
to resolve the problem. I was told by someone at work that
cryptography was added in SP2, so maybe you need to install that. My
version claims to be SP3 already, and won't let me install SP2 though.
