Janes FA-18 has been known to work with Windows XP without any problems,
just as long as you install and play it using an ADMINISTRATOR account.
Others have had to use Compatibility Mode to install it. Here's how it works:
Section I: Compatibility Mode
To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:
To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).
1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98 / Me <==== This is your best choice
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.
Section II: Patches
You can download and install the latest patches for Janes games from:
http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=j
Section III: Manual Installation Method (from Google groups):
"OK, I figured out how to make it work. The problem is that the setup
program is not Win XP compatible. You can get around this by copying
the entire CD to your hard drive. Next overwrite the setup.exe and
_setup.dll with new ones from another game (I used Jane's USAF).
Then run the setup from your hard drive (I did the full install). Next, make
sure your game is patched to at least version 1.2 (available from the Jane's
site). Finally, go to your registry and find the entry for Fleet command:
Edit the setting for the CD Path to your CD drive letter since it will be set
to wherever you installed your game from. That's it." (Easy for him to say). ;-)
