trouble with Email attachments

What exactly are .LNK files? I'm having horrible trouble with Email attachments. When I try to send a file from Word it picks up as a .LNK instead of .DOC & they either won't arrive or the receiving person can't open them. Help. Is it my Email or Word??

In what manner are you attempting this?

Here it succeeds when clicking FILE|SEND TO|MAIL RECIPIENT.
A new mail message (using the system mailer) is created with the document
atttached.

*.lnk is a shortcut to a Word.doc Stored here: C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent
