I recently reinstalled windows xp over the version of it
that came preinstalled on my computer. It recommended
that I install it on a different part of my hard drive,
but I didn't have any space left for that, so I replaced
the previous version. Now whenever I turn on the computer
it asks which version of windows xp I want to run. There
are two versions and one (the one I installed recently)
starts up but the other (the one that came with the
computer) doesn't, apparently because it is missing a dll
file. I'm pretty sure the old version doesn't exist
anymore on my hard drive, but the folder for my old
administrator profile does, although I can't get into it
and there is no way of accessing the profile. I'm
guessing this is why I can't change the display settings
from 640x480. I could be totally wrong. Anyway, my
problem is that I only have one display option and no way
to change it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home

Visit the support website of the manufacturer of your computer or video card.
Search for the latest Windows XP compatible video adapter drivers.
Download and install them in accordance with the installation instructions.

Afterward, right-click on your desktop and select Properties > Settings > Advanced.

Under the "General tab" in Advanced Display Settings, adjust your
DPI setting to "Normal Size (96 DPI)" and click "apply".

Afterward, right-click on your Desktop and select:
Properties > Setting and adjust your Screen Resolution
settings, then select "Highest (32 bit) Color Quality setting,
and click "apply".
