Trouble with 3-D Effects

Hi, I am having trouble with the 3-D effects. It will not allow my to create
these effects on any inserted picutres or text. I am able however to apply
shadowing. Why is this? I would appreciate any answers anyone might have.
 
I am using Power Point 2003. When trying to apply the 3-D effects I have been
going to the draw toolbar and clicking the 3-D button. Upon clicking this all
the possible effects will appear but I am not able to apply any of them.

3D effects can only be applied to autoshapes in PPT 2003.

For text, use Insert | Word Art. You can get some 3D effects on text there.

For pictures, draw a rectangle (or other autoshape) then use Format |
Autoshape, and on the Fill tab, select Color, then Fill Effects. Go to the
Picture tab, choose Select Picture and navigate to your image. OK your way
out. You can now apply a 3D effect to the picture-filled shape.

2007 lets you apply 3D effects (bevels and the like) directly to pictures
and text,
