I would check that the PowerPoint Viewer installation file (or a link to it)
are not in your start-up menu.
Perhaps also, there is a program that feels (wrongly) that the PPV
installation program is the 'reader' for one of the file extensions. It may
be a corrupted file extension association.
Then, I would look at my system settings to find out where the run command
is being generated from. This is not something for novice to do, nor is the
NG the best forum for explaining how to hack/edit the system files and
registry. These are the things that, if botched, can change a computer into
a paperweight.
It sounds, from what I've heard you say, that there is something on your
system initialization (Start-up) routine that is calling for the PowerPoint
Viewer installation program to run. This is not normal.
Could you please post back the complete and exact wording of the error
message (including the title of the message box). This may not be helpful,
but I would feel better knowing we are jousting the same windmill.

I am running Windows 98 second edition so I tried to rid my computer of
the PPV 97, went through the procedure of downloading the new installer,
then downloaded PPV 2003. When I first rebooted I got the message that the
system was looking for a missing shortcut-PPV 97. When it asked if I wanted
that shortcut to point to PPV 2003 I answered yes. The PPV 2003 works just
fine, as did the PPV 97. Only now instead of getting the message "do you
want to install PPV 97" each time I reboot, I now get the same thing except
it says "PPV 2003." Just like before, if I answer "yes" it uninstalls the
PPV. Now what should I do? Thanks in advance for your help.
