Have there been any reports of viruses that disable anti-spyware
programs? I have three most often recommended, and I think something's
wrong with 2 of them.

Spyware Blaster (no probs, but how do you know anyway?)

Spybot (Runs, but always says "no problems," and it claims "no
available updates" for *months* now)

AdAware 6 This worries me. On launching, it says "Error loading
AdAware reference file," but it loads. But it will not update the
reference files more than 5%.

Thanks for your thoughts, and I'll look for your response

One of my mates out of state has the same issue, but he was not at home
when I finally got back to him, so I could not VNC his machine. So what
is wrong here? Do we need a re-install of Adaware? He gets the 5%
update, then it zonks out.

Make sure your anti-virus is up-to-date, do a full system check. To be even
more sure, do an online check here:

Spyware Blaster (no probs, but how do you know anyway?)

You don't know, but using Spywareblaster decreased the detections by both
Spybot and AdAware significantly on my machine, so my guess it was doing a
good job.

Version 1.3 final had an update last week or just before that IIRC, you
might want to check which version your using.
AdAware 6 This worries me. On launching, it says "Error loading
AdAware reference file," but it loads. But it will not update the
reference files more than 5%.

Uninstall it and download and install Adaware SE 1.05, it updates fine
here.

plenty of trojans e.g. Optix Pro use process killing of AV software. whether
they kill Spybot and Adaware, i don't know. they usually can be configured to
kill any executable of choice.

to really get deeply rooted-in trojans, you should scan from Safe Mode or DOS
(or a live disk like Bart's PE Builder). use NOD32 and F-prot DOS scanners.
then use Kaspersky, NOD32, TDS-3, and Stinger scanners while in safe mode. all
of these are free or have 30 day trials.

that should get most garden variety trojans, worms, and viruses. by the way,
patch up Internet Explorer, that helps with spyware issues.
