trouble starting

Hello, I've been experiencing problems with starting my
computer. I hit the power, it starts, but the drive is
not engaging and it then shuts off. Happens for a while,
then it will just start. I would think this is strictly
hardware issue, but my computer has been hanging a lot
lately when I go to shut down, forcing a manual power
off.
Any thoughts on if this is a virus and how i can address?
I run ad-aware and spybot. All my XP updates are up to
date.

Paul, you may want to run a hard drive diagnostic you can get from the
manufacturers website. Also, try Motherboard
Monitor. It will keep an eye on your important voltages from the power
supply.
