My boss asked me to help him order a new server. I told him to get an
entry level Dell server and just make sure that it had two identical
hard drives and a tape backup.
My plan was to have the two drives in a raid 1 (mirror) setup and then
tape backup at least weekly if not nightly. That way, if one of the
drives failed, we could just drop in a new drive and wouldn't have to
restore everything from the backup.
Well we got the server and it seems he ended up ordering a system with
2 40GB Ultra320 drives and a 40GB tape backup.
For what we do, Ultra320 is TOTAL overkill. (And probably a major
waste of money too).
Now he wants me to set it up.
Anyway, the problem I have is that I was under the impression that I
could set up Windows 2000 Server to mirror the two 40 GB drives
together.
It seems that I can do this but I then can't boot off of them.
So at this point, I'm not sure what to do.
I could get a new IDE boot drive and a copy of partition magic to move
everything to the new boot drive. As a side note, the system came
from Dell with a 39MB FAT "EISA Configuration" partition. What this
is, I have no idea.
Then I could mirror the 2 SCSI drives. Of course, this doesn't mirror
the boot drive. That was the whole point of mirroring in the first
place.
The other thought was that I could drop in a IDE RAID card and two new
IDE drives and set them up mirroring. Then just use the 2 SCSI drives
for storage.
The final option is to just send the whole thing back and order a
different system.
How do people typically set up a system with a single boot/data drive
with a mirror and a backup in Windows 2000? Are hardware RAID cards
always necessary or is there something to Windows 2000 mirroring that
I'm missing.
ARRRRGGGGHH!!!! Thank god it's Friday.
