I am having trouble getting my graphics card to run in AGP 8x mode.

The motherboard is an Abit IC7-Max3 and the graphics card is an Sapphire ATI
Radeon 9800 XT. The PC has 1GB Corsair TwinX RAM, and an Antec 400W power
supply, running Windows XP Professional.

The AGP setting in the BIOS is 8x Mode. When I make the changes in the ATI
driver (to 8x mode), and the PC is rebooted, AGP reverts to 'Off'. The ATI
driver documentation says 'SMartgaart' checks for stability and sets the
mode accordingly. BTW, I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers
for the graphics card.

Have I missed something? Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

Mike

Hi Clint

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, I have already done this.

A mate of mine can't get his 9600XT based card running at 8x. He's using
a Gigabyte GA-7VA motherboard. It kept crashing the system until he
turned it down to 4x. The ATi driver sucks, too. Every so often it'll
forget the refresh rate. He'll have to exit a game, tell it to apply the
refresh rate (which it says it's already applying) then reenter the
game. It does this every time he reboots, too. I was only able to get it
working at 4x for him, but couldn't get the refresh rate to 'stick'.
I'll never go with ATi again after I experienced similar problems.

What was the solution? Do you have a google url?

The latest Intel Chipset drivers weren't installed after all ... after
installation, the PC wouldn't reboot properly. I then had to reboot in safe
mode and reinstall Catalyst. Everything works fine now.
