Trouble running a game

Hello group, thanks for reading. I'm having real trouble running the game
"Gender Wars" on Windows XP. I really love this game and I don't really want
to bin it.

It ran fine under Win95, and under Dos7, but XP doesn't like it at all.
Compatibility mode makes no difference. I've tried running it at the command
prompt: it says the CDROM isn't installed, but I can access the drive at the
prompt. The game is not Windows registry-aware, it just installs in a
folder, doesn't even create a start menu entry.

If I use mscdexnt and dosx commands manually (even though they are both in
the ntvdm startup files), sometimes the screen goes blank and I can't get
back, or occasionally it runs but with the game music but no sound effects.

The game *will* run in dosbox, but it goes like a 3-legged donkey. The CD is
OK, no scrathes or other faults.

Can anyone tell me how to get this game to run?

Windows XP SP2
AMD XP2400+
512mb ram
120gb and 10gb HDDs, both NTFS.
(I once tried installing it on the 10gb disk when it was FAT, but guess
what?)

TIA Tony.

I have the same problem except that i want to uninstall it but i cant and i
want to unistall the game because the game freezes right as i enter the game.
If anyone else has the solution please PLEASE email me at
(e-mail address removed)

Hi Tony Luxton,

Your best bet would be to to use the Multiboot bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html

That will give you the pure DOS environment Gender Wars enjoys.

Hi Jimmy.

Er, that link didn't work. I tried googling it, but came up with nothing. In
the meantime, I found that if I start a command prompt, then start
command.com (to start the VDM), *then* start mscdexnt and dosx manually at
the prompt, *then* start VDMsound, I can usually run the game with no
problem. But when I exit the game the machine freezes. Still, it's better
than nothing!

All the entries in autoexec.nt and config.nt are correct, and both are
referenced in the .pif file for the game. Any clues there?

regards Tony.

Hi Tony Luxton,

Looks like the site no longer exists. Use a regular DOS boot disk
instead, and configure your settings as per the readme for that game.

You'll no longer be in a Windows XP environment, so anything goes. :-)

But I'll need an FAT partition on my HD, won't I? And I'll have to find some
sort of DOS driver for the CDROM. Oh, deep joy........

Hi Tony Luxton,

A Windows 98 Boot Disk with CD Rom support *might* do the trick.
It boots you into a DOS environment. Otherwise, you can find many
images available of a DOS 6.22 boot diskette with CD Rom support.

Jimmy, I think I've got this sussed. If I go to full-screen (alt+enter)
first, then type the following commands in this order:

command (to start the VDM)
dosdrv (VDMsound)
mscdexnt (even though it's in the startup file)
dosx (ditto)
cd <path to game folder>
gw (the game executable)

then the game runs perfectly.

The big difference is going to *full-screen first*, because otherwise the
machine freezes, sometimes when starting the game, and always when exiting
the game.

I still can't figure out why mscdexnt and dosx aren't loading from the
startup files though, but I'm quitting while I'm winning!

I hope this helps someone.

regards Tony.

Hi Tony Luxton,

Great post! I'm glad that the game is working as intended. :-)
