Trouble reinstalling printer

Running Windows Xp Pro; service pack 2. Lots of storage and over 1 gig
of memory

I have this HP OfficeJet J5750 All-In-One printer that HAS been working
great for the past 1 1/2 years. Two days ago; I attempted to fax a
document from my computer. It wouldn't go. Connections are all good. The
computer recognizes the printer; the printer recognizes the computer.
The printer will print and the printer will manually fax documents. It
just wouldn't fax from the computer or SCAN. Kept getting error messages
that it couldn't open up a file because of incorrect settings.

Contacted HP Support and using their chat feature went through numerous
steps to get this thing working. Couldn't. Final out come was a
suggestion that some files were corrupt and to do a reinstall. ( I
already had done one; but hadn't uninstalled. Just installed over the old )

Did a uninstall and a install. Now all I get is a printer; no fax
printer. Before; there were always two printer icons under "Printers and
Faxes". One for the 5700 printer and one for the 5700 Fax printer.

Have done the uninstall and install 6 times. Same result. No fax
printer. Have checked HP's help pages. They have a step by step page on
solving such a problem as this. Basically all it amounts to is to check
if certain files are loaded and if they aren't; to reinstall.

If have disable my anti virus and firewall whilst installing.

Any suggestions

Any suggestions

1. Restore from Windows's System Restore
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

2. Restore from last backup.
You do regular backup, don't you? If not, start doing it today.

Try uninstalling the software again and disconnect the printer. Go to
Start>Run type: regedit click Ok and go to
HKey_Current_User\Software. Expand and look for HP entry. Delete
The same with HKey_Local_Machine\Software.
Restart and reinstall the Printer Software and connect the Printer when
told to do so.

Using a restore point or my most recent back up ( 1 week ago ) was going
to be my last resort. Just baffles me why this stupid thing won't
install properly. Another option I have; is to install it on my laptop
and then see if I can "Share" the All-In-One.

Might have a look at the registry. I have to be careful though as I have
numerous HP products installed and attached.
