trouble playing file

tried downloading an anime online. it is listed as something called a torrent
file? for some reason no matter what I use I cannot play it. I tried Windows
Media player to no avail. Even tried downloading other programs to be able to
play it. No help. I have downloaded it from several sites, and also made sure
the files was good by talking to others who had downloaded it. But still I
cannot get it to play. Help?
