Hey folks,

Perhaps I was hasty, but I just bought a new laptop. I loaded Word 2000 onto
it and activated it. All went fine. I then tried to load it on my desktop
which was running Windows 98 with an older version of Word, I think, 97. Of
course it
will not activate. I have less than 50 more uses of Word 2000 on my desktop.
My question is: How do I get back to my old and happy version of Word on my
desktop.
Will it appear after the 50 new documents are used or have I fried the old
version with the new?

Thank you,

Michael

If this is a retail version of Word 2000, you are permitted to install it on
both a desktop and a laptop. If you are unable to activate it using the
dialup method, then use phone activation.

Dear Suzanne,

Thank you for your help, but here is the real problem:

I bought my laptop from Dell (fine people). I thought I was getting
Microsoft Word with the computer and instead I got another program. I was
not happy with this, as I have used Word for years and did not want to
change. So, I called Dell, told them it was probably my own silly fault, but
they were kind enough to send me a copy of Word anyway. The copy was "For
distribution with a new PC only." So it was not retail. I did not realize
that I could not put it into both computers, but now, here I am.

Please help. Each time I open Word I get the massage that I only have so
many more documents. Is this a countdown to certain Word demise? What can I
do?

Thank you,

Michael

If you got it with the desktop rather than the laptop, I'd say try phone
activation anyway, explaining the circumstances. But you will have to
uninstall it from the laptop. If (as I gather), you got it with the laptop,
then you'll need to find the original media and reinstall the previous
version on the desktop.

Dear Suzanne,

Thank you for your help. I got the software with the laptop. But the desktop
is about 5 or 6 years old and I did not receive a CD of Word with the
desktop computer. This, even though, I bought it new. I was surprised
myself. but did not foresee any problems. So, I do not have an original disk
to install.

What do you think?

All the best,

Michael

All I can suggest is that you contact the vendor of the desktop computer and
ask for a CD, though I don't hold out much hope of this working. A better
approach might be to buy Works Suite 2004, which includes a full version of
Word 2002, along with several other useful applications. The price is about
$100 (less in office discount stores), and there is a $15 mail-in rebate
offer currently in effect. See
