Hello,

PC is a Dell Precision 330 with New IDE Hard drive. I can start windows
2000 setup from cdrom. It formats NTFS and copies all the files to the
drive. When the first reboat happens I get a "disk error" press any key to
restart. I've tried different Hard drive and different OS as well with the
same message. I think it may have to do with the IDE controller but I can't
seem to find any driver from dell I could load during setup. Thanks for any
help!

Yes, you're correct. What controller or service tag?

It should work. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install
CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created from
your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom
and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow
the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Dave, I really appreciate you trying to help me but I don't understand your
last post. I can start the setup from cdrom but after the first reboot I get
a disk error.

Did you delete the partition and restart setup? If the problem persists can
you post the exact text of the error message?

YES I did. The error with the cd in the drive stats
Press any key to boot from cdrom...
a disk read error accured
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

This happens after the setup starts and copies all the files to the hard disk.

without the cd in the drive the first line is not there. I've tried
different drives. Different OS's, Server OS's. Different partition sizes
even formated with fat32. Same error. This pc has a zip drive and cdrw on
the secondary controller with just the one IDE drive on the first controller.

This is a hardware issue. Something is probably incorrect in cmos setup. You
might try removing the zip.

Dave,

Cmos said harddrive, but when I looked at the details it was user configured
I set it to Auto and the OS Loads. Thank you! Time to password protect the
bios :-)

You're welcome.
