Trouble in 64-bit paradise

I upgraded my motherboard and processor to the ASUS K8V
Deluxe and the AMD 64-bit 3200+. I also added 2 SATA HD
(RAID 0). After the Win XP Pro (32-bit version) install,
I started adding the updates. SP1 is the only one that is
giving me problems. It starts off fine, however, when it
finishes and reboots, the machine will not get into
windows again. It goes through the POST and when the Win
XP logo would normally appear ... I get nothing. It just
sits there with a black screen.

I tried to repair the install and I could get to the point
where SP1 tries to continue the setup, however, my
computer then went into a cycle where it just went to the
same point and rebooted itself continuously.

The only fix I have is to reinstall XP and do all of the
updates except SP1. The problem is in order to update my
video drivers (RADEON 9200 128MS) ... I need SP1 installed.

I am at a loss of what to do. I have never seem this
before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is not an XP problem. You have a processor for which XP was not
designed. I recognize that the AMD 64 processor uses emulation to
accommodate the 32-bit version of XP and 32-bit apps. Nonetheless, we have
no frame of reference. You should be asking this on an AMD 64 board.

AMD64 processors do not use emulation to run 32-bit OSes, they are run
natively just as a regular 32-bit Athlon would. Noe of the 64-bit features
are "turned on" or, more accurately, available to the OS because it can only
address 32-bits of memory space. It's only when the processor is running a
fully 64-bit OS that it uses any special modes to accomodate 32-bit apps.
