I am using IE 6.0 with SP1 installed. I am having
trouble downloading files from any web site that I have
tried. When I click on the link to download a file, the
Save As dialog box does NOT come up to give me a chance
to tell it where to save my download. This happens no
matter what file or where I try to download from.

I have done the following to try and resolve the issue:

1) Installed the latest MS security patches
2) Eliminated spyware from my computer
3) Scanned my computer for viruses with current virus
protection.
4) Turned off my firewall
5) Checked all the settings in IE to make sure
downloading is enabled.

None of the above steps solved my problem.

Does anyone know why I can't download in IE ? Thanks in
advance for any assistance.

Neil.

What file type?
You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

For exe files.

Again, I repeat, I am not given a chance to tell what
folder I want to download it to and there is no
indication as to where or not it is even downloading.

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Alan,

I did have the .exe key in the registry and it was
associated with the program NETZIP. I deleted the
registry key, rebooted and still couldn't download exe
files. So I then un-installed NETZIP and rebooted and
now I can download exe files just fine. I noticed when
NETZIP was un-installing that it was removing other
registry keys.

So THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your assistance. It was VERY
MUCH appreciated.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, I am aware of Netzip and the problem it causes with .exe files.
It would have recreated the .exe key after you deleted it and
uninstalling Netzip is the only solution.
