Trouble Downloading Files

Whenever I download a file, the file gets to 99% right before the
prompt dissapears. I know that this is supposed to happen when you
select the 'close this dialog box' checkbox, but this also happens to
me when the box is unchecked! After the file is downloaded, I cannot
find it - even doing a full search of the computer, including hidden
system folders. It's really annoying and I've had to resort to Firefox
to download things from the net. Anyone run into anything similiar?

Windows version? Is MS Windows AntiSpyware or Defender installed? Were
either ever installed?
