Trouble Downgrading To XP Home

I have a computer that has Vista Home Premium installed. I want to downgrade
to XP Home (I have a full, never used, legal copy).

Additionally, I have a new formatted hard drive installed. When attempting
to install XP, the OS installs many files on the drive, then once the message
"Windows Starting" appears, the installation halts and the following message
appears:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives
or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your
computer. (end message)

Following the above instructions makes no difference. A second installation
results in the same error message. I'm hoping someone can explain what's
going on and how to resolve the problem.

Thank You.

Do a clean install (save important data to an external device first).

He said, "Additionally, I have a new formatted hard drive installed. When
attempting to install XP...."

How much cleaner can you get?

I guess you wanted to "downgrade" to XP because it kept crashing?

These problems are normally the result of faulty memory.

Most likely, your hardware is faulty (unless you've had XP working on
that machine before, in which case things are very strange). I'd consult
the manufacturer of the machine (probably to return it) or, if it's your
responsibility, swap out hardware with known good parts and find the
faulty component. I'd start with the memory, then check the graphics
card, then check the power supply, then motherboard.

Are you rebooting your computer with the XP disk in the CD/DVD Drive to
install, or trying to install after the computer has already started?

You reboot to clean install.
