Hello-

I have recently been trying to administer the workstations on the network
from the server using remote desktop. Here is my configuration:
- installed RD client on our windows2000 DC
- enabled Remote Desktop connections on 1 of the workstations (running XP
pro).
- Added Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins groups to the "allowed users" on
the workstation.
- logged into the windows2000 DC with my credentials (I am a member of
domain admins as well as enterprise admins)
- opened the Remote Desktop client, entered the name of the workstation that
had been configured to allow connections.

I get the error:
---------------------------
Remote Desktop Disconnected
---------------------------
The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to
accept new connections.
It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur,
contact your administrator.

So, I have gone through my mental checklist:
1) permissions... check
2) connections enabled.... check
3) ping the machine to make sure it exists... check

This is a basic network. I have not enabled anything too fancy(that I know
of), all machines in the same subnet, there is no firewall between anything,
no ipsec, etc, etc.

One more additional bit of information.
I enabled remote desktop connections on another workstation that is not a
member of the domain. Allowed all users, no passwords, etc. I can connect
to that one fine. Weird.....

OK, please help. Please, please, please.

Thanks,
Steve

Try "telnet machinename 3389". What type of behavior do you see? If
you get a blank command prompt screen, the workstation is properly
listening for a remote desktop session. If you get an error that says
you could not connect, then double check to make sure that Remote
Desktop is enabled (a few people in the past have noted that Remote
Desktop sometimes get disabled when updated with security hotfixes).

Interesting....
C:\>telnet powerspec-01 3389
Connecting To powerspec-01...Could not open a connection to host on port
3389 :
Connect failed

So that would be that it's not enabled.
Thanks for the tip!

Cheers,
Steve
