Trouble connecting to DUN with old modem

I have an old ISA 56K modem that I've been using for several years
now. A few days ago it stopped calling my favourite ISP. I get a
dial tone and then a message that the signal has disconnected (Error
639 in DUN) and that I should double click on the connection to
reconnect. The modem doesn't get as far as actually dialing the
number. I wonder if anyone knows how I can work around this.

The modem will connect to other ISPs ok. It is just the one that I
use regularly that it won't connect to. Does anyone know what is
going on?

Cheers
Bill

Because it connects to other ISPs, I would suspect to problem to be in
your favorite ISP's end. Check to make sure your connections are
well-seated and that you can connect to other providers, then call them
for technical support.

You could also try dialling the ISP's connection number with an ordinary
'phone and see if you get through to a modem (the screeching noise). If
you don't then it is a line problem, possibly at their end.

It can't be the ISP as it does not dial the number. I would look to see if
the number that is to be dialed has somehow gotten changed in the computer.

The trouble is that it doesn't dial ANY number when I try to dial
Virgin. There is 10 seconds of ready-to-dial noise and then the modem
says "Disconnecting" from the attempt to dial. It doesn't dial any
number.
I thought that the connection might have been corrupted so I created a
different Virgin connection with the same phone number and log on
details.
That did exactly the same thing ... disconnected before it had tried
to dial.
I really don't know what is going on.

What does DUN error number 639 mean anyway ?

"ready-to-dial noise" should be a dial tone. If it isn't, look to
your connections. The on-line relay may have a fault, which was
common in the days of pulse dialling and much making and breaking
of inductive circuits with undersized relays.

Its OK. I've sussed it out now. I had an expired Firewall from Panda
Internet Security that was 50 days out of validity. When I erased it
from my system I could connect to my ISP just fine.

You'd have thought Panda wouldn't do something like that if they
wanted me to go back to them. Their virus checker was always down so
I'm not very happy with the service they provided.
