Trouble burning many (> 15,000) files to CD-R

No Such Luck

Hi All:

I have over 15,000 files in 7 directories (500 MB) that I would like
to burn to a CD-R. I tried just adding the folders as a CD-data
project in both Roxio and Nero and burning the CD, but this leads to
the data in the 6th and 7th directories being corrupted (i.e., when
traversing these directories, the computer hangs indefinitely until
the CD is ejected). Also, an OS error is reported for either of these
2 directories when a copy to the hard drive is attempted.

I thought with that many files, it might be an underrun problem. So I
used winzip to archive the files, and burn the archive. When finished,
winzip reports that the burned zip file is not a valid archive. Also,
an OS error is reported for the zip file when a copy to the hard drive
is attempted.

I tried creating images of the data in both Roxio (iso file) and Nero
(nri file), and burning the CD based on these images. Basically, the
same initial problem results (i.e., the 6th and 7th directories being
corrupt).

Basically, I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the
problem might be, or what else I could possibly try?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm running:

Win 2000
Nero 5 Express
Roxio

Well... using a single ZIP file means that it's not the number of files.

Could be a number of items:
- Corrupted burner software
- Cheap CD media
- Overtaxed power supply.

A few things to try...

- Choose a different file system - UDF instead of Joliet for example
- Remove/reinstall your burning software
- Try a different brand of media
- Try a different burning speed
- Try drive in another PC
- Try another drive

To clarify, you then have a zip or only a few zip files,
yes?

If so, your problem is the burner or media, not the number
of files. Try different media and/or burning at a lower
speed. If all else fails try upgrading the burner's
firmware then replace it.
I tried creating images of the data in both Roxio (iso file) and Nero
(nri file), and burning the CD based on these images. Basically, the
same initial problem results (i.e., the 6th and 7th directories being
corrupt).

The outer portion of the disc is being burnt faster, you may
find that different media has a different max burn speed to
prevent errors, regardless of what's on the media's label.
If i want maximum compatibility with CDRs I usually burn at
32-40X.

Win 2000
Nero 5 Express
Roxio

I'd not have both Roxio and Nero installed or do they get
along together now (they didn't used to)?

I can think of two gotchas that might be biting you. One is the directory
depth: if you are using ISO 9660 then the maximum depth is 8. But if that
one doesn't get you then this one might, at least if you name files like I
do. See the quote from the Joliet specification about the length of the path
names after the sig.

ISO 9660 (Section 6.8.2.1) specifies restrictions regarding the Depth of
Directory Hierarchy. This section of ISO 9660 specifies that this number of
levels in the hierarchy shall not exceed eight.
On Joliet compliant media, however, the number of levels in the hierarchy
may exceed eight.

Joliet compliant media shall comply with the remainder of ISO 9660 section
6.8.2.1, so that for each file recorded, the sum of the following shall not
exceed 240:

a.. the length of the file identifier;
b.. the length of the directory identifiers of all relevant directories;
c.. the number of relevant directories;

I have had similar problems. The difficulty seems to be with the Joliet
system. My solution was to put all the files in a TrueCrypt container
and burn that to the CD; the container can be mounted as a drive from
the CD to access the files. Zip also works but isn’t as convenient.

In my experience, as mentioned above, Roxio and Nero don’t play well
together. I dumped Roxio.

Do you have both Roxio and Nero on 1 PC? Don't they clash?

Have you tried doing a few folders at a time with Roxio, just dragging them
onto the CD drive? I backed up loads of datafiles this way.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. It turned out to be the media. I
tried the burn with some Memorex CD-Rs rated for 52x speed writing,
and it worked fine.
