Norton has detected a Trojan virus it says it can not delete.
The effected file is c: windows /system32/ stloader.exe
Is it okay to go into the windows folder and delete that file,
or is it needed to run Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Lance

Usually, when the a/v program says it can't delete a file it is because it
is running. Restart in Safe Mode and give Norton another try at removing
it. If it still fails, go ahead and delete the file manually.

If Norton has identified this trojan by name (check the Virus Log file for
this), look it up at the Symantec site. There are often additional steps
that the user needs to perform manually to complete the cleanup. Those
extra steps should be outlined in step-by-step format at the Symantec site.

hi. i am a retired hacker for the U.S government. theres alot of things i can tell you about trojans, one thing is that they are a big pain in the arse. start windows in safe mode, then try to delete it. thats the easiest way to do it. one thing about Sharon F's post: if it says its already running, YOU CANNOT DELETE IT MANUALLY. in my opinion, you might want to reformat your hard drive. this is a very effective way but you loose all of your data, so back it up. go to start, run, and type cmd . then when in ms dos, type format c: (no back slash). then follow the on screen instructions. if u want to contact me, my aim sn is fragmaster4life, my yahoo sn is anarkyhacker99 and my email is (e-mail address removed). please do not hesitate to contact me if you need more assistance.

You must've worked for the government alright, talk about your
overkill......you must've been the guy in charge of purchasing those $450
toilet seats.

Formatting to remove a simple trojan? Sort of like installing a new motor to
cure a leaky valve cover gasket.

Most trojan removal is simply three steps:

1) Identify the trojan file (your AV software can do that for you)

2) Kill the trojan (Can you say ctrl+alt+delete?)

3) Remove the startup references to it. This is the tough part, but they
generally use many common startup locations. This step is best done by
referring to the web site of the AV software for the proper location, or you
can do a hunt & peck through the registry and various other startup files
depending upon skill level.

Tried deleting under "Safe Mode" - So far, it looks like that did the trick.
Thanks so much, everybody
