What is a preferred freeware application for trojan search and removal on a
w2k system?

Spybot Search and Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) , Lavasoft Adaware
(www.lavasoftusa.com), Spysweeper. First two are free.

Since the OP clearly asked for freeware and the name of this group is
"alt.comp.freeware", why recommend a program that isn't freeware?
However according to their page, Spysweeper is a "free download." You
have to pay for the updates though.

It's a free trial download, it stops to work after the trial period ends.

Thanks to the help from this group, I was able to get rid of a nasty
one using AD2. The trick is to turn off your restore, use the AD2,
then re-boot the computer, and turn on the restore again.
AD2, by the way, didn't show that it had found anything, but worked
just the same.
Good luck.

If you can access the web, use www.rav.ro\scan (click the link under
the registration box; no need to register). It's an excellent scanner
but you need to remove malware manually, or search for a removal tool,
e.g. at Symantec. They were recently bought out by MS, BTW.

Cheers,
Larry

Thanks for the clarification, Rod. I kind of expected that this might
be the case and that's why I put free download in quotes.
