I noticed there are programs that specialize in scanning and removing
trojans, making me think that antivirus software can't handle them
(well). Is an anti-trojan scanner and remover essential?

Although some proggies are branching out, typically an anti-virus
program finds viruses, an anti-trojan program finds .. well, you get
the idea.

Essential? Depends on your internet habits.
A good idea? Probably so.

Yes, it is. Assuming of course that you can't avoid or control running
malicious programs. Essential for those who can't resist opening files
and attachments that are unsolicited. Essential for those who surf
indiscriminately using a poorly configured browser set to run active
content. Essential for those running unpatched, exploitable software.
Not essential for those who practice safe computing behavior.

Personally, I think that an anti-virus program or suite does a good job of
protecting you against trojans. Should you still be concerned about this
matter, simply do a search on the internet. There are lots of free trojan
removers available.
