Trojan Horse

Can anyone advise me where to find a secure method to remove a trojan horse
from my PC? I am in the process of following instructions on how to do it
manually (ie scan for files, safe mode, delete from registry, etc), but
wanted to see if anyone had an insight as to me trying this manually vs
downloading a removal program (although I read that not all suspect files can
be removed via a scan, that is why I'm trying it manually).

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Consult the web site of the antivirus application that initially
identified the specific Trojan (you've elected to keep this
information from us). There you will find either manual removal
instructions, a link to a removal tool, or both.

Additionally, McAfee has an automated tool called Stinger that
removes 45 of the most common viruses, worms, and Trojans. You might
see if your pest is included in Stinger's "hit list."

1) Download the following three items...

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt244.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM.

2) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
3) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
4) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Stinger, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors found
5) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both.
6) If you are using WinME or WinXP, Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
7) Reboot your PC.
8) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point
