My brother received notification from norton that he has the trojan.fivesec
on his pc. Running winxp, norton interenet security, adware and spybot. He
followed all the steps as indicted in the norton security reponse. It
appeared that the trojan was gone. All of the sudden this morning it is
there again. How do we get rid of this once and for all?

He followed all the steps as indicted in the norton security reponse.

Was he found guilty ? Sorry, couldn't resist.
Does Symantec recommend booting to Safe Mode and scanning the system
from there ? If not, suggest you do so.
BUT FIRST, check for updated definitions for NIS, AdAware, and Spybot.
Then run them in the order listed.

To start the computer in safe mode
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?

Also, strongly recommend that you empty IE's cache and delete * all
files and folders present in the Temp folders for each User Account.
First, show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Then, using either Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to

Documents and Settings\<UserAccount>\Local Settings\Temp

<UserAccount> represents the name of the Account ... e.g. Debbie could
be the name of your User Account. Delete all contents of the Temp folder.
To empty IE's cache, empty the contents of the folders/files in

Documents and Settings\<UserAccount>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Once you've emptied all of the Temp and TIF content, *** empty the
Recycle Bin ***
Now scan the system in Safe Mode.

I dont believe the norton sight said anything about safe mode. I will
forward this to him and see if it works. Thanks, and by the way, I am sure
he is guilty of a lot of things
