Trimming vids blacks out all information after trim

I finally got the exact clip I wanted into my project but I only want the
portion in the middle. Unfortunately, anytime I try to trim or clip the image
the information after the cut is blacked out. That would be fine if the part
I wanted was in the beginning of the clip, but it's not. Using the drag
handles is not working either. Is this just a glitch that I have to deal
with, meaning I'll never be able to trim vid clips to my satisfaction or is
there something I can do (a patch or plug-in to download or something) that
can fix the problem? Thank you in advanced for any and all help that can be
offered.
