In the timeline, I want to trim precisely 1 second of video from and
audio/video clip, but I am only a beginner for using this program.

I've looked in the help file, but it doesn't really give any pointers. Is
there a step-by-step guide of what to do for situations like this.

Believe I can help in trimming..

Load your movie into the timeline.

Go to the point in the movie where you
want to start the edit.

Hit the "Pause" button.

Hit the "Clip" button.. the one under
the playing screen.. to the left.. that looks
like a movie clip. This will put a "stop"
point in your movie, and will be the
point at which you want to start the
delete.

Play your movie to the point where
you want to end the segment you want
to delete. Hit the "Clip" button again.

(You can also "move" your movie by
dragging the timeline itself forward or
backward.)

You now have your clip isolated.

Place your cursor inside this segment
in the timeline, RIGHT CLICK your mouse.

Hit DELETE in the pop-up menu and your
clip will be deleted.

You can always restore the last deleted clip
by clicking EDIT up at the main toolbar, and
then clicking UNDO in the next menu.

If the segment you wish to delete is at the
beginning or end of your movie, place a
"Clip" point per above at the location you
wish to end or begin your delete and delete
per above instructions.

I realize the MM2 instructions and PapaJohn
instructions tell you how to delete sections at
the beginning or end of your movie by holding
down your mouse at the end/beginning of your
movie and sliding over the section you wish to
delete. You can use this same method once
you have place a "Clip" point in your movie, but
I've found that by using the two "Clip" points to
isolate a section, I have better control.
