I noticed trillian is my 3rd worst resource hog (15M) after Outlook (23M)
and Word (18M). Miranda and gaim don't look as polished though. Anyone
use something better?

I use Easy Message, I've tried them all and this is the best one I've
found.

I stopped using Trillian for the same reason - resource
usage.

Easy Message is a good choice - still some bugs to be worked
out (it doesn't handle groups very well for me.)

Miranda doesn't look so great by default - the first time I
tried it I went away in disgust. But the awesome thing is
that you can make it look however you want. Here's a shot of
how mine looks now:

Resource usage is about 5 MB (and another 5 paged) for all
those messengers including IRC.

I do not know what you mean with resource hog, but if you are refering
to the RAM it uses, then you should try to use a lighter skin. When I
changed from the default Trillian skin to Mircoscopic, it seemed to be
faster.

Once it gets a decent Yahoo! protocol plug-in, I'll make a complete
switch. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but is quite nice.

Same here. I use Microscopic and Trillian only uses 7 MB of RAM. (Don't
know what it was before.) I only applied Microscopic because I like the
way it looks, so this is just an added benefit!

FWIW, a quick Google would have pulled this up in seconds:

times very slow) online usage by the minute and can not spend the
time or $$ to look this up. Just my 2 cents worth."

Sitting around 9.1 MB here with Win ME skin...

Normally this would be an issue for some users, especially those with
constrained resources, but I have Ram to spare. The system is also
running quite smooth for 6:15am start time today. Not bad for a Win98se
system... };8)

Yeah - some folks are working on that. I use a miranda
plugin that works fine for my needs - so in my mind they're
done.

But in reality - there's still some work to do - to support
file transfers etc.

I just started using Miranda - http://www.miranda-im.org . It's freeware
and it uses only 2-4 MB when running with only AIM support. It has
plugins to expand its capability so you can add only the things you use.
