Tried to re-install XP to 'fix' problem - now I'm in a fix

When I received a used computer(sold with XP installed and key), it seemed to be running OK, but then I decided to run disk cleanup and the machine immediately crashed over and over. I somehow got it running, ran a check of the hard drive that indicated no problems with the drive. Then, since I figured there must be a flaw in an XP file causing the crash when I ran disk cleanup, I decided I should try to re-install the operating system. Since I had the Product Key but not the CD for the 'new' computer, I decided I should use my XP Upgrade CD (and product key) that I had for my old computer. Well, it started to run the install, and then generated an error message and shut down. Now, even with a boot up in Safe Mode, I get a momentary XP opening screen, and then it goes black and hangs up. So, I guess it time to surrender and give it to an expert?...or is there a reasonably straight-forward way to get the system working again?

A Repair Installation is the fix at this point.
However you can not use the license of your Windows XP on this
computer if it is installed on another computer.

Is the Product Key that came with the computer on a sticker affixed to
the computer?
If yes, another CD will not likely work with that key and you will
either need to get the CD from the seller or buy Windows XP.

Repair Installation:

Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,
Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.
